St Paul's School Masterplan
Barnes, London
We were selected to develop the masterplan and first phase buildings for the full redevelopment of the school campus on its prominent site next to the Thames in London. The majority of the existing buildings were constructed in the 1960s and are reaching the end of their working life.
We worked with the school on a detailed masterplan and planning consent for the site. As well as masterplanning and urban design, this included extensive engagement with the school, drawing up detailed designs for several buildings, working with fundraisers, and developing a comprehensive phasing and implementation strategy that included extensive infrastructure works.
At the heart of the scheme are a series of new outdoor spaces including a new central courtyard and a new riverside square. The buildings have been designed using a palette of high quality durable materials, with the aim that they will leave a lasting legacy for future generations of the school.
First phase buildings
Work began on site with the diversion of services and creation of a major new infrastructure to make way for the new buildings.
The first to be completed was the RIBA award-winning new Science building. The four storey building houses 18 science laboratories with associated prep and storage facilities, a careers and universities centre, and a new ground floor administrative hub.
The theatre and drama centre followed. It includes classroom spaces and a foyer overlooking the river and is designed for teaching technical as well as performance aspects of the theatre arts.
Site-wide biodiversity
A site-wide biodiversity strategy integrates a new surface water drainage and attenuation system, and biodiversity measures, with landscapes for play, education and enjoyment. The implementation is phased and tied in with that of the buildings. The site boundary and river edge will be enhanced to provide habitats for birds, bats and other wildlife. Biodiverse wetland gardens are proposed along the river's edge with 35% of new roof area to be planted with green or brown roofs.
We are delighted. From briefing to handover, it has been a pleasure to work with the team on this exemplary project.Hugh Muirhead, Project Director, St Paul’s School
