Malthouse Theatre King's School
Canterbury
We were invited by The King's School to create a dynamic theatre complex in their newly acquired malthouse building.
The Malthouse is a functional building designed around the stages of the malting process. It is symmetrical about its long axis, but lengthwise is divided into three parts, whose dimensions are ideal for the three main parts of the theatre: auditorium, front-of-house and studios.
Our approach to the competition brief was to respect the grain of the building, retaining its sense of order and a good part of its character while creating modern, flexible theatre spaces.
