Cologne Football Stadium
Cologne, Germany
This competition design for a 45,000-seat football stadium for the 2006 World Cup included extensive changing, media and entertaining facilities as well as a health and fitness club. The stadium is situated in a large sports park within a forested area outside Cologne and is approached through the retained 1920’s gate to the park. The main entrance to the stadium forms a giant ''goal'' framing a glazed façade with an over-sailing suspended roof.
The seating is arranged in three tiers and is designed to allow spectators to get as close to the action as possible. Exemplary sightlines also ensure that all areas of the pitch can be clearly seen by every spectator.
