Carmelite Chapel
Langham, Norfolk
The new chapel was added to a listed Victorian house in North Norfolk which had been taken over by the enclosed community. The chapel contains a choir occupied by the nuns, and a small public chapel. The resulting L-shaped building encloses a courtyard, which introduces members of the public to the special world of the monastery.
The white plastered walls and untreated timber joinery have the rustic elegance to which many architects but few clients aspire. The modulation of light in the building contributes significantly to the air of spiritual calm about the place. The nuns are delighted with their new house of worship.Architects' Journal
