The new Production Workshop for set construction and fabrication for the Royal Opera House started on site in Purfleet Essex at the beginning of March 2010 and is due for completion in November 2010. The new building accommodates a large paint-shop for vertical and horizontal scene-painting as well as carpentry and metal workshops, together with office and ancillary spaces. The main contractor is McLaren Construction, who will be developing the design with their own design team from the Stage D design prepared by Nicholas Hare Architects and Arup (structures and services). Both Nicholas Hare Architects and Arup are being retained by the Royal Opera House to monitor the design and construction of the building during the design and build procurement process.
